Every death and serious injury on Tasmania's roads has a profound impact on individuals, families and the broader community. While Tasmania has made significant progress in road safety over time, progress has largely plateaued over the past decade. Too many people continue to be killed or seriously injured on Tasmanian roads, highlighting the need for renewed focus and action.

The current Towards Zero Road Safety Strategy 2017-2026 set a target of reducing annual fatalities and serious injuries to fewer than 200. While important progress has been made, this target has not been met, with 324 people killed or seriously injured on Tasmanian roads in 2025.

As Tasmania looks to the future, road safety challenges continue to evolve. New technologies, changing travel patterns, population growth and evolving community expectations all influence how we improve safety on our roads.

Tasmania's next Road Safety Strategy will build on what has worked, learn from past experience, and draw on research and best-practice approaches to guide future action.

Community consultation is an important part of developing the Strategy. While government plays a vital role in setting direction, understanding community insight is essential to developing an effective road safety strategy. Road trauma cannot be eliminated overnight but sustained and coordinated action can significantly reduce harm over time.
